Patients comparing tissue banks often see “AATB accredited” on one website and nothing on another. This guide explains what AATB accreditation is, what the 15th edition Standards cover, how to check a bank, and what changes on January 31, 2027. It also explains what accreditation cannot tell you about banked adipose tissue.

**TLDR AATB accreditation is a private, non governmental program that has operated since 1986. It sits on top of FDA registration, which is mandatory under Part 1271, and on top of any state license. Accreditation is valid for three years, with inspection by independent assessors, and a public search tool shows who holds it. Accreditation says nothing about whether banked adipose tissue will ever have a clinical use, and banking does not guarantee access to any future therapy.**

**Important Disclaimer:** Save My Fat does not provide FDA-approved treatments or cures for any disease. Banking adipose tissue today does not guarantee eligibility, access, or clinical benefit from any future therapy, clinical trial, or medical program. No adipose-derived stem cell product currently has FDA approval for any condition. All content is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Patients must consult their own licensed healthcare professionals regarding all medical decisions.

You are comparing two banks. One site carries an accreditation badge and the other says nothing about it. The badge feels like an answer, but it answers only a narrow question.

How to check whether a bank is legitimate is one of the questions readers bring to this site most often. This post explains the badge using AATB’s own public pages and the federal rule underneath. It does not say whether any particular bank, including our laboratory partner, is accredited. That question goes to the bank.

## What Is AATB Accreditation?

AATB accreditation is a private, non governmental program under which a tissue establishment is inspected against the AATB Standards for Tissue Banking and, if it passes, is listed as accredited for three years. AATB has run its Accreditation Program since 1986, and its [accreditation page](https://www.aatb.org/accreditation) says accreditation “signifies that tissue establishments operate with the utmost professionalism and adhere to AATB’s rigorous Standards and policies.”

Three details on that page matter. Accreditation is valid for three years. Inspections are done by qualified, independent assessors. An applicant needs six months of operation in compliance with AATB Standards before it can apply. A current badge therefore reflects an inspection by an outside team, and it has an end date.

AATB is a private organization, not a government agency, and its accreditation is not a license. Under 21 CFR 1271.10(b), an establishment whose HCT/P meets the four criteria in [section 1271.10](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-L/part-1271/subpart-A/section-1271.10) “must register with FDA.” AATB’s own [regulatory page](https://www.aatb.org/regulatory) confirms that FDA registration and inspection are required, and that AATB inspects “in addition to FDA inspections.”

## What Do the 15th Edition Standards for Tissue Banking Cover?

The 15th edition of the AATB Standards for Tissue Banking covers institutional requirements, records, authorization and consent, donor screening, testing and eligibility, tissue recovery, processing, packaging, labeling, storage, distribution, and a quality program. AATB’s [standards page](https://www.aatb.org/standards) describes them as first published in 1984 and as “the only private tissue banking standards published in the United States.”

The 15th edition became effective January 31, 2025, announced in [Bulletin 25-1](https://www.aatb.org/bulletin-25-1), dated January 27, 2025. AATB revises the edition through numbered bulletins with effective dates: a second revision came August 11, 2025, and a third in July 2026, covered below.

That list overlaps with federal current good tissue practice. Under [section 1271.150](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-L/part-1271/subpart-D/section-1271.150), CGTP governs “all steps in recovery, donor screening, donor testing, processing, storage, labeling, packaging, and distribution,” and Part 1271 addresses communicable disease, not clinical value. The public standards page does not mention adipose or autologous tissue, and the Standards text is member only, so no adipose specific requirement can be confirmed publicly. Our guide to [good tissue practice](https://savemyfat.com/current-good-tissue-practice-cgpt-fda-standard-lab/) explains that federal layer.

## How Do You Check Whether a Bank Holds AATB Accreditation?

You check AATB accreditation through the public [Accredited Bank Search](https://www.aatb.org/accredited-bank-search), which listed more than 100 accredited establishments as of September 2026 and filters by name, distance, tissue type, and activity type. The activity types are recovery, processing, storage, and distribution, and the tissue type filters include “Autologous Tissue.”

Accreditation is granted to an establishment, not to a brand or a website. That matters for a company like Save My Fat, which connects patients and providers with a U.S. tissue bank and does not itself collect, process, store, or treat tissue. Check that the establishment that will hold your tissue is the one listed, under its own legal name.

Ask a bank three things in writing. Is the establishment accredited, and under what name does it appear in the search tool? Since what date, and when does the current three year period end? What scope does it cover, meaning which tissue types and activities? Our post on how to [verify a bank](https://savemyfat.com/how-verify-stem-cell-banking-company-before-you-pay/) lists the other documents to request.

## What Changes on January 31, 2027?

On January 31, 2027, the third revision to the 15th edition takes effect, and its headline change replaces the word “ambient” with a defined temperature range. AATB announced it in [Bulletin 26-1](https://www.aatb.org/bulletin-26-1), dated July 27, 2026, after Board approval, stating that “this revision of Standards will become effective as of January 31, 2027.”

The bulletin says the changes “associated with the specification of a temperature range to replace the term ‘ambient’ have been incorporated into the text,” alongside revisions from a Council comment period. It does not publish the numeric range, and the revised text is member only, so this post states no number. Ask the bank to show the relevant Standard.

Why does one word matter? A vague term leaves room for interpretation, while a defined range gives an assessor something to measure. Our guide to [tissue bank validation](https://savemyfat.com/tissue-bank-compliance-validation/) explains how a bank documents that its conditions match its procedures.

## What Does Accreditation Not Tell You?

AATB accreditation does not tell you whether banked adipose tissue will ever be used, whether any future therapy will exist, or whether you would qualify for one. It describes how an establishment runs its operations, measured against private standards for tissue banking in general, and it is not a government license or an FDA approval.

A patient should keep three layers separate, because a bank can hold one without the others. The table sorts what a bank’s website is actually claiming.

Layer Who issues it Required or by application What it addresses

FDA registration and listing FDA, under 21 CFR Part 1271 Required for establishments manufacturing 361 HCT/Ps, interstate or not Communicable disease controls and CGTP

State license or registration A state health agency Required in states that have adopted one Varies by state

AATB accreditation AATB, a private organization By application, after six months of operation to the Standards Adherence to AATB Standards, verified by independent assessors

Ask for the FDA registration record first, the state layer second, and treat accreditation as an additional signal, not a substitute. Our guide to [FDA establishment registration](https://savemyfat.com/fda-establishment-registration-for-hct-p-providers/) covers the first row, including the rule in [section 1271.1](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-L/part-1271/subpart-A/section-1271.1) that registration applies “whether or not the HCT/P enters into interstate commerce.”

On adipose tissue, AATB’s public pages say little. Its [tissue types page](https://www.aatb.org/tissue-types) lists adipose within the musculoskeletal category and defines autologous tissue as donation intended only from and to the same person. That is the only public AATB reference to adipose found for this post, and it says nothing about outcomes.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is AATB accreditation the same as FDA approval?

No. It is a private program that verifies adherence to the AATB Standards. FDA registration is a mandatory federal step for establishments that manufacture 361 HCT/Ps, and FDA approval of a product is different again. No adipose-derived stem cell product currently has FDA approval for any condition.

### Does accreditation mean my banked fat will work in a future therapy?

No. Accreditation addresses how an establishment operates, not whether any clinical use of stored adipose tissue will exist. No adipose-derived product has FDA approval, banking does not guarantee eligibility for any trial or program, and any future use depends on regulatory status at that time and a licensed provider’s guidance.

### Should I wait for the January 31, 2027 revision before banking?

That is a question for you and your own licensed healthcare professionals. Meanwhile, ask any bank how it documents storage and shipping temperatures now and whether it expects assessment against the revised text.

## Key Takeaways

AATB accreditation is a private, non governmental program that has operated since 1986, is valid for three years, and is verified by independent assessors. The 15th edition Standards took effect January 31, 2025, and a third revision, announced in Bulletin 26-1, takes effect January 31, 2027, replacing “ambient” with a defined temperature range. Check it in the public search tool under the establishment’s own name, and ask since when and for what scope. It sits on top of mandatory FDA registration and any state license, and it says nothing about whether banked adipose tissue will ever have a clinical use.

Save My Fat connects patients and providers with a U.S.-based tissue bank. It is not a tissue bank, a laboratory, a medical practice, or a treatment provider. Stem cell and regenerative medicine regulations vary by state, including specific informed-consent and disclosure requirements in Florida, Utah, California, Georgia, and Tennessee governing tissue and stem cell services. Banking adipose tissue does not connect patients to any treatment pathway, and any future use depends on FDA regulatory status, physician guidance, and the availability of approved or investigational pathways at that time.

Readers weighing adipose tissue banking for potential future use can review [current pricing](https://savemyfat.com/pricing/) or ask their accreditation questions through the [contact page](https://savemyfat.com/contact-us/).
